KBL Official Rules

  • KBL Official Rules are conducted in accordance with FIBA Official Rules, and accepted NBA Official Rule as needed.
  • The officials shall be comprised of a referee and two umpires. They shall be assisted by the table officials.
  • The game shall consist of 4 periods of 10 minutes. If the score is tied at the end of playing time for the 4th period, the game shall continue with as many extra periods of 5 minutes as is necessary to break the tie.
  • A player who has committed 5 fouls shall be informed thereof by the referee and must leave the game immediately.
  • A team is in a team foul penalty situation when it has committed 4 team fouls in a period. When a team is in a team foul penalty situation, all subsequent player personal fouls committed on a player who is not in the act of shooting shall be penalized by 2 free throws, instead of a throw-in.
  • Each team will consist of a maximum of 14 players including 1 foreign player. No more than 12 team members are entitled to play.
  • Teams shall use uniform numbers from 1 to 99, "0" and "00." If a player is assigned any number between 1 and 9, the number must be a single digit(e.g., 06 is not a permissible uniform number). Player on the same team cannot simultaneously be assigned the numbers "0" and "00."
  • Whenever a player gains control of a live ball on the playing court, his team must attempt a shot for a field goal within 24 seconds.
  • Whenever a player gains control of a live ball in his backcourt, his team must cause the ball to go into its front court within 8 seconds.

League Procedures and Schedule

  • Regular season
  • October through March of next year
  • Each team competes in 54 games for a season (27 home / 27 away)
  • Each team competes 6 games against 9 teams in a complete regular season
  • Playoffs
  • From the middle of March through April
  • Top 6 teams in the regular season shall advance to the playoffs
  • Quarter-finals : Best of 5 series
  • Semi-finals : Best of 5 series
  • Finals : Best of 7 series
Playoffs Procedure
  • Required qualification for KBL players
  • Korean players must meet the following requirements to apply for the KBL Pre- Draft Tryout.
  • ① College Students, who are scheduled to graduate in current year.
  • ② College Students, who are received dean's approval to apply for the KBL Pre-Draft Tryout.
  • ③ High School Students, who are scheduled to graduate in current year.
  • ④ High School Graduates or the equivalent, who have experienced on abroad.
  • ⑤ Overseas Koreans, who are not designated by the KBL teams nor signed a player's professional contract.
  • Ethnic-Korean players must meet the following requirements to apply for the KBL Pre-Draft Tryout.
  • ① Must have at least a high school diploma
  • ② Must be at least 18 years of age
  • 'Ethnic-Korean' means whose biological father or mother has previously held Korean citizenship and has since gained foreign citizenship. If 'Ethnic-Korean Player' is picked at the Ethnic-Korean Draft, player MUST take legal procedure to obtain Korean citizenship.
  • The draft priorities of players shall be determined by KBL Rules & Regulations
  • Korean players' salarycap is 1.9 billion won for each team. Korean players are recruited by the KBL draft system through draft picks determined by the previous regular season's team standing.
